Is that really his name? No, really? Come on, you have got to be kidding me. A lot of people have mistaken Chris Moneymaker for being just another guy with a funny pseudonym, but if Mr. Woodcutter is working with trees, then Moneymaker makes millions in poker.

Chris has had a great passion for gambling throughout his whole life. He began playing bridge with his grandmother and turned to Black Jack after he had discovered it. Cards may have been Chris’s great passion, but he decided not to make it a too common habit. Chris instead went to school. After scoring a Masters degree in accounting at the University of Tennessee, he settled with a suburban life working as an accountant for a local company.

Like so many others, Chris went to the movies to watch Matt Damon and Edward Norton starring in Rounders. He was greatly inspired by the depth of the game and realized that one could score a lot of money in this game. Unfortunately, finding legal card rooms was like looking for a needle in a hay stack. Chris decided to settle with the regular online poker rooms, since there was a 24/7 availability.

After browsing through a few poker rooms, Chris finally settled with Poker Stars. He started playing at some of the tremendously popular sit’n’goes and scheduled tournaments. Chris quickly realized that going for the top tables was impossible, so he cashed in a few bucks and played hand by hand in competitions that ranged from $20 and up to $40. He proved to be quite successful and built up a small bank roll, which was enough to boost his confidence.

Winning a few tournaments from time to time seemed like a big deal to Chris at that time, but little did he know that a $39 satellite tournament would change his life, forever. Chris Moneymaker engaged 17 other players and was hoping to learn a little about the much fiercer competition that these levels provided for. Instead of being tutored, he became the tutor and scored a seat to another satellite of 63 other players. This was by all means no regular tournament, but in fact a World Series of Poker satellite, with only one winner to get to the main event. After hours of hands that sometimes seemed endless to him, he finally faced his last opponent at the final table with a considerable stack lead – and won.

Chris Moneymaker had now won an entry to WSOP. By the time, he was unfamiliar with real life players and he had little time to prepare. Dan Harrington, Phil Ivey and many other super talents participated, but as the days went by, Chris realized that he was getting closer and closer to the final table. At the fourth day he had played his way through dozens of tables to end up with the best of the best. His chance of turning $39 into $2,500,000 was real, and who could tell that an accountant from nowhere would take home the World Series of Poker and score the first prize? Obviously no one did and reckon that Chris was more surprised.

Chris is currently employed at Poker Stars as a spokesperson and one of three world champions (together with Joe Hachem and Greg Raymer) to represent the company. You will find him at the high stake cash game tables but first and foremost tournaments. We hear that he enjoys online gaming just as much as the real thing, so don’t be surprised if you see him hanging there for hours. You know, like the rest of us do.
